Sing to the Lord

praiseSing to the Lord for he is good!

There are people who express their emotions to their loved ones. People send letters, tweets and pictures to show it. Some even sing for the people they love. How much more must we express our love and gratitude to the Lord God who is worthy of being loved and adored forever?

Singing to the Lord God is not just something that was done in the New Testament. Singing to the Lord God was done even in Old Testament times.

Moses and the Jews sang to the Lord after being delivered from the oppressive rule of the Pharaoh of Egypt.

Exodus 15:1 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD: “I will sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted. Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea.

When the Jews empowered by God won against the king of Canaan, then their judges Deborah and Barak too sang unto the Lord.

Judges 5:3 Hear, O you kings; give ear, O you princes; I, even I, will sing to the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD God of Israel.

In fact the books of Psalms in the Old Testament has a lot of songs to God. Even king David who wrote the Psalms loved singing praises to Holy One.

Psalm 100:1-5 A Psalm for giving thanks. Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

Psalm 71:23 My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed.

Now I would strongly recommend that you sing Bible based songs.

The purpose of singing to the Lord is to glorify him and not us. This is where the Bible comes very handy in discerning true and pure worship songs which exalt God alone. With all due respect, we must totally avoid any praise and worship songs that are NOT true praise and worship songs. Let me make this real to you, any songs that portray any race, gender or church ministries in a hyped out way are invalid songs. Any songs that sing about great achievers or great works without mention of God’s hand in it are unbiblical.

Sing in whatever style you can that gives him honor.

I sing to Jesus in different styles such a classical, rock and pop. I never think one style of singing is greater than the other when it comes to praising the Lord Jesus. What matters most is not whether you have a great voice but in fact its your intentions towards God. You need to sing with faith and sing with courage. If you could get a musical instrument while singing to Christ it would be better for its a great enhancement to your worship of God.

Worship at Church not just in prayers but songs too.

In church there are certain times dedicated to singing praises unto the Lord. Make good use of such times to praise God joyfully. Don’t bother if the person next to you in church is singing off tune. This is not a time to get distracted, say a quick prayer in your mind to get patience and then continue singing. Keep it between you and the Lord so that you don’t get distracted.

Here are a few worship songs that you can sing to God:

Scriptures on singing that you can reflect on:

2 Chronicles 7:6 The priests stood at their posts; the Levites also, with the instruments for music to the Lord that King David had made for giving thanks to the Lord—for his steadfast love endures forever—whenever David offered praises by their ministry; opposite them the priests sounded trumpets, and all Israel stood.

Psalm 68:32-35 O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God; sing praises to the Lord, Selah to him who rides in the heavens, the ancient heavens; behold, he sends out his voice, his mighty voice. Ascribe power to God, whose majesty is over Israel, and whose power is in the skies. Awesome is God from his sanctuary; the God of Israel—he is the one who gives power and strength to his people. Blessed be God!

Psalm 71:23 My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praises to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed.

Psalm 150:4 Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe!

Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

1 Corinthians 14:15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also.

James 5:13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise.

Hebrews 13:15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.

Revelation 5:9 And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation

Revelation 14:3 And they were singing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and before the elders. No one could learn that song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth.
