Psalm 2 (The coming reign of Jesus on Earth)
Let’s read Psalm 2 which speaks of the coming reign of Jesus on Earth. Here we go:
1 Why do the nations rage and the people’s plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.” 4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. 5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying, 6 “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.” 7 I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you. 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” 10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
This Psalm is one of the few instances where God is laughing in the Bible. He has good reason to laugh. Because he has chosen Jesus Christ his only begotten son to defeat all the rulers of the earth who want to rebel against God.
Psalm 89:27 And I will appoint him to be my firstborn, the most exalted of the kings of the earth.
Hebrews 5:5 In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.”
A religious teacher once told me that the Pharisees of Jesus’ time tried to relate only the verses of his second coming to him when he came on earth the first time. Due to which they didn’t feel that Jesus is the Son of God. The very same teacher observed that if the Jews would have considered all of the scriptures about both the first and second coming of Jesus the Son of God then they wouldn’t have rejected him as the Savior of Israel. (Think of it for a few seconds)
No wonder Jesus himself said to them in John 5:39 “Search the scriptures; for in them you think you have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me”
Why I mentioned this is to bring forth a point which is there are prophetic verses about Jesus which are yet to be fulfilled. Like for instance the scenario of Psalm 2:2 shows that the rulers of the earth are aware not just of God but also about Christ his anointed One. It means that the around that time (which will soon come) most people will have the Gospel preached to them as a witness. So there will be some rulers who will try to go against the Gospel teachings.
Now I’ve noticed that some cultures accept some of the Gospel values such as equality, freedom, liberty and the pursuit of (true) happiness but won’t necessarily accept Jesus Christ as their Lord. However, I’ve seen that there is a movement against the Lord God and its origins are very ancient and mysterious. This is an act of the devil, who is trying to convince many world leaders to try to attack the Gospel values but ultimately defy God’s anointed One who is Jesus our Lord.
In some places there is a call for separation of Church and State. However, they won’t do that with other religions and the functioning of the State. In the past few decades the 10 commandments have been ridiculed. There have been referendums in part of the free world to change many laws which are mentioned in the Bible. For instance the death penalty for those who commit murder is replace with life time imprisonment. Then within certain churches there have been heated debates on allowing openly pervert ordained church leaders to continue in their posts after being found out in their sins. There is a rising wave of solidarity by many world leaders to corrupt the concept of marriage by granting a divorce at the drop of a hat and also allowing immoral unions (same-sex marriages). Then there are people in the church who being legalistic, add rule on rule to the existing Gospel tenets and make it hard for the average Christian to feel righteous in God.
There are many websites that have been saying that the world is being run by Satan’s chosen human elite in certain spheres of influence. If you may have read them, it may feel very depressing and scary. Satan and his minions have been trying for a very long period of time to make sin the main rule of the world and putting away all principles that are from God. He does it by influencing not just the rulers but also the masses of humanity who have not accepted the Gospel. Obviously, the devil tries to even deceive believers.
Do not fear though, for the Lord God is laughing at them. Because Christ the Son of God will come back on earth. It doesn’t matter whether the enemies of God are numerous, have many weapons or are even hiding among church members. Jesus will come as a conquering champion and will defeat the most sinful Anti-christ and the false prophet. He will execute God’s vengeance over all the earth. He will then rule over all the earth.
All of the Devil’s effort to overthrow the authority of God will be therefore a total waste. Very much in the same way the Devil and his angels were kicked out of heaven for rebelling against the One True and Sovereign God of All. This time Jesus won’t be coming alone. He is calling in the cavalry! There are going to be numerous holy angels and saints coming along with Christ to defeat the forces of evil on earth.
That is why Psalm 2 solemnly warns the rulers of the earth to serve the Lord with due fear,. Otherwise due to disrespecting the Son of God everyone who acts foolishly will surely be judged and destroyed in the Lord’s anger.
As people who believe in Christ, we are reminded to take refuge in the Lord because God has ordained his blessings for doing this. We must always believe that the Lord Jesus is supreme over all the rulers of the earth and therefore not be fearful when they plot wickedness. Rather keep reminding ourselves of the coming reign of Jesus on earth.
A few scriptures to reflect on:
Matthew 25:31 When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.
1 Tim. 6:14-16 I charge you to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ; and this will be made manifest at the proper time by the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, whom no man has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.
1 Thessalonians 3:13 May He make your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His saints. Amen.
Jude 1:14-15 Now of these Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying: Behold, the Lord cometh with thousands of his saints: To execute judgment upon all and to reprove all the ungodly for all the works of their ungodliness, whereby they have done ungodly: and for all the hard things which ungodly sinners have spoken against God.
I pray that Jesus leads and guides you in this age and in the age to come. All glory and praise and honor to God who will again send his Son Jesus to earth. May the Holy Spirit keep reminding you of this. Amen.
