Psalm 123 (Our Eyes Look to the Lord Our God)

To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens! Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, till he has mercy upon us. Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt. Our soul has had more than enough of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud. (Psalm 123: 1-4)

In just four verses, Psalm 123 touches a very important topic; look up to the Lord God. Let me first show you the importance of this by the following example. There are business groups where the workers or staff pay great attention when the president or the CEO of the company arrives in person at the office. They have big expectations from the big boss. Some might even have grievances which they have hope to get fixed up. While others are there to tell the business leader of the way other companies have been disrupting their business through cheating and bribery while their own company has been pure in gaining market shares etc. The people could have even taken help from their colleagues to mutually sort out their grievances or have a good consultation with each other to tackle the unfair competition from other companies. But perhaps that didn’t work out well for them or they are at their wit’s end. Some don’t even know if their own colleagues are capable of helping them. So the best resort for them all is to look up to their CEO from whom they expect concrete answers.

There are times in your walk with Christ, when you realize it’s all between you and HIM, with NO middle man or woman to intervene. For instance, people feel free to discuss their marriage problems only with a trusted few in the church, because they know not everyone might be able to help them. Yet, due to issues of secrecy, they don’t even talk to preacher about it. They eventually pray to Christ about their problems. Some wives pray with great tears when they realize their spouse is into criminal activities outside the house while being kind and loving inside the home with them. It’s disturbing for them to know that their husband actually beats up people to earn a living instead of attending a decent job.

There could be husband’s who too feel them same when praying in secret if they realize that the wife has got obsessed with becoming thin and is now starving herself to a disturbing degree. They wonder what caused the wife to act that way. Now for other couples it not all that extreme, they only wish that they get to spend more time with each other. This is where they realize that not everyone will emphasize with them. Some may even indirectly mock them, saying that ‘why didn’t you get a clear understanding on such things before you got married?’ To save themselves from such fake people they directly look up to the Lord.

In doing certain religious/spiritual tasks I too would realize I couldn’t depend on any human but had to only pray to God to attain success. And the Lord answered my prayers really well. All of a sudden I could complete things in a few days which were earlier stuck for months. Praise God!

Some people face issues about the contempt from the proud. There are evil and sadistic mockers who worry people about their poverty and class. For them wearing the costliest gold watch is the right way of life. If a person is not careful and keeps believing in their notion of the right way of life, he might get depressed or may even get obsessed with earning money. And in the end he’d realize that even with more money, they will still mock him citing that he doesn’t have so and so luxury. Such a person must get his inner strength from the Lord Jesus in prayer. He must ask the Lord to expose the lies of those who value pleasures of the world instead of caring for the afterlife.

Talking about contempt of the proud, there is a certain group of proud people we must always pray against. Satan’s first crime was pride, the pride of trying to be a god even like unto the Lord. The Devil and his vile minions who are also called as the demons are extremely proud of their rebellion against God and the successful temptation of Adam and Eve. This wicked Kingdom of darkness works in the shadows causing man to fight man, woman to envy woman etc. They are the original hate group of the world!

The Kingdom of God led by Jesus Christ is the only kingdom with the ability to stand up against these eternally proud evil doers. Christ had during his time on earth caused many demons to flee from those whom they possessed. Remember the verse; Our soul has had more than enough of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud (Psalm 123:4). In those and even today people suffered from demonic oppression and possession. Jesus didn’t have to request the demons nor plead with them. He cast them out and he rebuked too!

And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and, kneeling before him, said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him.” And Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.” And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed instantly. (Matthew 17:14-18)

Look up to the Lord, because you love and respect him. If you have a need then ask him to deliver you from all evil doers. It’s biblical to ask for this! He it not a mere king, he is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Depend on Christ for your deliverance and healing.
