An exhortation to live a life pleasing to God

For a believer in Christ is there is no better life than to live a life pleasing to God.  Do not be concerned with pleasing a fallen world which is highly fickle and sinful. They do not have a true to sense of justice and easily fall prey to their lusts and vanities of life. You have been taken out the ways of darkness into the light of Christ in which you are encouraged to live on forever. Do no fall back into the world. Remember this; And the world passes away, and the lust thereof: but he that does the will of God abides forever. (1 John 2:17)

Making the world your backbone is one of the worst choices one can do. Because the world will be judged due to its sinfulness then on what would one lean on? Though the world loves sinners yet it also ends up dishonoring them in the end. For instance, the world likes lustful movies which promote adulterous lifestyles but if a man gets divorced due to his adultery, then the world is the first to condemn him, that’s how hypocritical it has become. Besides, the world will only love you as long as it can extract benefits from you. After that it will keep away from you as if you never existed.

Therefore, put your trust in the Lord God and do not live for the sinful ways of the world. You got out of the grime of wickedness by God’s grace, so now keep yourself clean. This is not about yourself but rather about God. Yes, our God who has willed by Jesus Christ that you be saved from sin and damnation. You are not living for yourself but for Christ Jesus! Live by the Holy Spirit for the glory of God every hour and every day. That is the real best life now (and forever).

Here are a few verses from the Holy Scriptures to reflect upon (a bit long but worth the reading):

  • So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive good or evil, according to what he has done in the body. (2 Corinthians 5:9-10)
  • Now this I affirm and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds; they are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart they have become callous and have given themselves up to licentiousness, greedy to practice every kind of uncleanness.  You did not so learn Christ!— assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus. Put off your old nature which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new nature, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. (Ephesians 4:17-24)
  • Finally, brethren, we beseech and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you learned from us how you ought to live and to please God, just as you are doing, you do so more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from unchastity; that each one of you know how to take a wife for himself in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like heathen who do not know God; that no man transgress, and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we solemnly forewarned you. For God has not called us for uncleanness, but in holiness. Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you. But concerning love of the brethren you have no need to have any one write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another; and indeed you do love all the brethren throughout Macedo′nia. But we exhort you, brethren, to do so more and more, to aspire to live quietly, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we charged you; so that you may command the respect of outsiders, and be dependent on nobody. (1 Thessalonians 4:1-12)

Beware of Spiritual Delusions

There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death (Proverbs 14:12)

Of the many delusions a person faces in life, spiritual delusions are the worst. As these delusions whether they cause physical harm or not, they always lead towards spiritual darkness and damnation. Let me make is clear that spiritual delusions and mental delusions or hallucinations are completely different things. The latter needs professional medical and psychiatric treatment.

The Greeks and Russians have another term for spiritual delusions or spiritual deceptions known as Prelest. ( I made a mention of them as they have a belief that only they teach about dangers of Prelest while people from other nations especially the West avoid this. I take that with a pinch of salt). Various churches and preachers in a good number of countries do speak about the dangers of spiritual delusions though they don’t use the word ‘Prelest’. Here basically Prelest pertains to unawareness of one’s own sinfulness and/or also corruption through falsehood which apparently seems sweet and legit to begin with.

Let me give you a simple example to be aware of what it means to be spiritually deluded. A man who is married, goes regularly to church with his wife. Due to various reasons, they are not happy with their marriage. Then one fine day, he meets another woman to whom he takes fancy to over a period of time. Now up to this point, this would sound like nothing religious, just one man being unfaithful to his wife and obviously heading for divorce. Here’s where the difference, the man ‘prays’ about his marriage and feels he got a ‘revelation’ to divorce his current wife. Because he ‘feels’ led by the ‘Lord’ to marry this new ‘devout’ woman who will help him to be happy. He makes a mention of this to his preacher but somehow the preacher cannot convince him to relent of this stupidity. Then he goes on to commit adultery, gets caught and the marriage is over. Besides, the local church and the preacher where he used to go, are now stuck in a web of shame and controversy over what happened. So in short, he felt something spiritual that seemed nice till hell boiled over.

In the above case, that man didn’t bother about what the wisdom of God says marriage, reconciliation and divorce. All he bothered for was himself and not God’s will. He didn’t bother about purity for himself nor anyone else. So a spirit of deception came to him pretending to be a godly experience of ‘peace’ during his prayers. There’s a Bible verse that comes to mind; And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.(2 Corinthians 11:14-15)

Now it would be unwise to think that spiritual delusions happen only in cases of relationships while other areas are quite delusion free. In fact spiritual delusions can happen potentially anywhere and to anyone. It’s possible that spiritual delusions affect more than one person at the same time.

Lets also consider the following verses about a large scale spiritual delusion in which people will make mockery of the Second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:

This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. (2 Peter 3:1-7)

woe to deceivers

Another situation where a person could be under spiritual deception is about prosperity. Nothing wrong in getting rich by righteous means. However, one must also choose to have the right attitude towards God when working to be prosperous. The Parable of the Rich Fool mentioned below makes it clear to us:

And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.” (Luke 12:16-20)

A person who in soul revels in vain desires is one most prone to spiritual delusions. Desires usually considered a bait for deception are usually those of greed and pride.

For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the Lord. In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him; all his thoughts are, “There is no God.” (Psalms 10:3-4)

Another thing that leads to spiritual delusion, is taking pleasure in unrighteousness. Yes, despite various admonishments and clear examples of the downfall of the wicked due to their sins, there are lots of people who still take pleasure in sin. So of these sins include vulgar songs and jokes, racism, financial crimes, sexual perversions, murder etc. Though time and again people have seen the evil consequences of witchcraft, they will still take delight in its so called benefits. In short, there are people who still don’t want to believe the truth of the Gospel. This brings to mind the following verses:

For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming. The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders,10 and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, 12 in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. (2 Thessalonians 2: 7-12)

So now to summarize you can avoid spiritual delusions by all the following methods:

  • Never ignore the counsel of the wisdom of God.
  • If it goes against the Bible, you might as well avoid it.
  • Pray with the right intentions.
  • Do not mistake good feelings for divine approval.
  • Do not be greedy for anything.
  • Do not have pride in your heart.
  • Believe in the truth, believe in the Gospel.
  • Never take pleasure in unrighteousness.

One more thing before I can conclude this is that you must always depend on the Holy Spirit to keep your heart and mind in the will of God.

Christ be with you!

Always on always ready Christian

We must always choose to be always on always ready Christians. This can help you serve God better and more effectively. Most importantly you must be ready for the return of Christ Jesus always.

I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” (Luke 18:8)

Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. (Matthew 24:44)

And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. (1 John 2:28)

To this effect there are a few things you might like to consider having. This will ensure that you are always on always ready for our Lord Jesus Christ.

1) Training regularly

Keep training yourself in the ways of godliness. For this, consistent training in the teachings and principles of the Bible is essential. While going to a weekly Bible class is good it might not be possible for everyone to attend. Try to read good books that teach you the things of the Christian faith. Joining a Christian library can help you get hold of such books. Though checking for Christian teachings online is a fine option you must take due diligence that what you are learning is worth it. I mean be cautious against heresy and legalism and any teaching that relaxes your guard against the evil of sin.

However I must add that nothing outdoes plain old fashioned Bible reading. Yes just reading and meditating on the words of the Bible. Commentaries are secondary. Here your objective must be to become more like Jesus Christ every time you read it. This is not a book to read and forget but rather to read, believe and be transformed into the person whom God wants you to be.

2) Mental state of faith

Have a frame of mind in which you can pray and intercede anytime. It might that be you’ve enjoyed a great dinner at home and are soon going off to sleep. When all of a sudden you get a message on your phone asking for prayer for a person who is injured in a train crash. Then before you sleep you can pray for the injured person. A short prayer said in faith should be enough. It’s vain to say that you are going to wake up in the morning and only then pray but won’t before you sleep.

This is not limited to prayer but to
any needs for self review, deeds of mercy and charity. You must be mentally focused on the will of God at all times.

3) Discernment

You need to think very clearly about your actions and objectives for the Lord. Spend sufficient time to check on what and where you put on your efforts over to. Is it as per the deceitful things of the world or as per the will of God? Never be so drawn up in the entertainments, worries and passions of life that you are not able align yourself with the will of God. Because being too busy with work or play might make you distracted from God’s will if you are not going to make that choice to keep God first on a regular basis.

See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. (Colossians 2:8)

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. (1 John 4:1)

4) Hard work and planning

You need to plan to follow God’s plan. Might seem odd but lots of people have their own ideas which contradict the Lord’s work in their life. For them its their way or the high way. They choose the easy way out such as steal instead of do a honest job to earn a decent living. May all who choose a life of sin for the sake of ease leave their evil ways lest they merit damnation in hell.

Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest. ( Proverbs 6:6-8)

Hard work must never be equated with legalism. Certain things that need you to work hard are either natural or from God’s grace. Yet some are legalistic so you must avoid legalistic hard work.

By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith. ( Hebrews 11:7)

Each Christian has been assigned good works which only he or she can do. Keep trying to discover what new good deed you can do for Jesus Christ. You might be a volunteer at church events for the elderly but might have not got a chance to be in foreign mission. There might be a foreign missionary who must have missed on singing in the choir as a child. So never feel bad about not getting the chances others get. You never know what they missed on. But in all this just pray to know where you are needed and then work for the Lord God over there.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10)

5) Be joyful in the Lord

Are you joyful in the Lord? If not then something is missing. The joy of the Lord is something that you need to cherish in your life. This joy comes through the Holy Spirit by Jesus Christ.

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. (Romans 14:17)

So I pray that God, who gives you hope, will keep you happy and full of peace as you believe in him. May you overflow with hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13)

The joy of the Lord unlike any earthly joy gives you strength in times of adversity. Its not that you will be laughing or smiling every time but you will be able to overcome all hardships and struggles for God. Even Jesus could overcome so much because of the joy that was set before him by God.

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:2)

Now that you know these five principles put them to memory and put them to practice. Christ be with you!
